Unmarked Sauteuse 30cm "Barrier"

It was one of those Sundays when the air carried just the right amount of crisp autumn chill, and the sun slowly broke through the clouds. I didn’t have much planned for the day, on these days it is nice to check out some websites  for good quality copper pans. There’s something magical about sifting through old objects, this feeling that you might find something with a story, something that’s perhaps hundreds of years old.

De Haar Castle is located outside Utrecht, Netherlands. It is the largest castle in The Netherlands

The oldest historical record of a building at the location of the current castle dates to 1391. In that year, the De Haar family received the castle and the surrounding lands as a fiefdom from Hendrik van Woerden. The castle remained in the ownership of the De Haar family until 1440, when the last male heir died childless. The castle then passed to the Van Zuylen family. In 1482, the castle was burned down and the walls were destroyed, except for the parts that did not have a military function. These parts probably were incorporated into the castle when it was rebuilt during the early 16th century. The castle is mentioned in an inventory of the possessions of Steven van Zuylen from 1506, and again in a list of fiefdoms in the province Utrecht from 1536. The oldest image of the castle dates to 1554 and shows that the castle had been largely rebuilt by then. After 1641, when Johan van Zuylen van de Haar died childless, the castle seems to have gradually fallen into ruins. The castle escaped total destruction by the French during thedisaster year 1672.

The Kitchens

There are several kitchens and service areas in the basement. They are located around the central hall. This means that you can access every room directly from the hall, such as the cooking kitchen, the washing kitchen, the vegetable kitchen, the dairy kitchen and the butcher's

The kitchen is a different story. When you step inside, the copper pans will shine before you. This collection consists of 150 pans and is unique in the Netherlands. It seems to be even larger than the pan collection in the palace on Dam Square. Copper is a good conductor, but it is also toxic, so a new tin layer must be applied to the inside regularly. That is difficult to do and because the pans are so heavy, they switched to stainless steel pans in the castle in 1984.

The coal stove dates from 1898. At that time this was a very modern kitchen. The grates next to the stove provided air for the fire and the exhaust ran underground to the chimney where the spit was attached. In fact, nowadays we are going back to the design of the past. Because in today's ultra-modern kitchens, you no longer see extractor hoods, but an extractor that goes downwards.
